Northwest Lineman School Financial Aid – How the Process Works
If you are considering a career as an electrical lineman, lineman school is your first step in the right direction. Many people who are considering this line of work are apprehensive about applying for lineman school due to the high costs of higher education. While training programs are typically less expensive than a traditional college or university, it can still be a hefty expense to pay out of pocket. The good news is that most schools now offer financial aid that can be used to help fund your education.
How Much Aid is Available?
First, it is important to note that those who enroll in apprenticeship programs, like the IBEW apprenticeship, may not be eligible for financial aid. Some apprenticeship programs will cover the cost of tuition, but students will not earn any wages.
There are quite a few different forms of aid available to those looking to become a power lineman. Federal grants typically offer the most aid, but there are also other programs available that may be able to offer assistance.
Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is designed to aid students who are looking to further their education. Depending on the school you are attending, you may be eligible for this grant, and in most cases, you won’t have to pay back the money granted. The amount of aid provided will depend on your financial need. The maximum amount of aid a student can receive is $5,645.
Academic Competitive Grant
The Academic Competitive Grant, also referred to as ACG, is available to students who have the greatest need for financial aid. Eligibility requirements are as follows:
- The student must be in their first or second year or a two to four year degree
- Must be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Second year students must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- First year students must not have been enrolled in an undergraduate program previously
- The student must be enrolled at least half-time
Students can receive up to $750 for their first year and $1,300 during their second year.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
Known as FSEOG, the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is also designed for students who need further financial aid. This grant is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students can receive up to $4,000 a year. The amount awarded to a student will be gauged by the school.
Workforce Investment Act
The local Workforce Development Board in your area may be able to fund part of your tuition and/or expenses. Contact the nearest Workforce Development Board center to find out if northwest lineman school qualify.
How and When to Apply
In order to receive federal aid to fund your lineman school education, you will need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA.
FAFSA forms can be filled out and submitted at any time, but applying earlier in the year will ensure that you get the most aid possible. As a general rule of thumb, you should submit your FAFSA form shortly after you file your taxes each year. The form can be filed either electronically or through the mail. Keep in mind that you will need to submit a new application each year to be awarded aid.
If you have yet to receive your financial aid package, but are in need of financial assistance, you can apply for an Emergency Tuition Loan. This will provide you with the funds you need to continue your education until you receive your financial aid package.
Financial Aid Tips
- Start with federal financial aid and then move on to private assistance opportunities.
- Submit a FAFSA application even if you don’t think you qualify for assistance. In some cases, private awards can only be granted after a student has been rejected for federal aid.
- Inquire about aid offered by the lineman school. Many schools offer financial assistance to students in the form of grants.
- Check out state sponsored grants. Most states will also offer grants to students who are attending school in-state.
While there are still many lineman that feel apprenticeship programs are the best way to get started in this career, attending northwest lineman college does have its benefits. Perhaps the greatest benefit is that it opens the door for financial aid opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable.
